Make Your Own Sugar Cookie Stickers

Rosell Studios LLC hosted an exciting workshop focused on designing custom stickers using special vinyl sticker paper and holographic laminate! Attendees of all skill levels came together to explore their creativity, drawing their favorite holiday characters, beloved foods, or adding fun and friendly phrases to their designs.

Participants were guided through each step, from sketching their ideas directly onto the vinyl paper to choosing from a variety of unique holographic laminate options. We ran exciting design challenges and draw-along sessions where Katherine, our head workshop instructor, demonstrated to students the use of her drawing tablet. By exposing students to the wonders of digital design technology, they are inspired to create with new tools and foster their own curiosity! Whether they preferred a shiny rainbow finish or a sparkling frosty look, every attendee was able to create a truly unique sticker with their personal touch. The workshop was a fun-filled way to celebrate the season, fostering creativity and leaving everyone with stunning stickers to cherish or gift!

Concept Art for Video Games introduces students to the design side of video game development. In this workshop, we analyze different characters from popular video games with illustration challenges and group activities. Concept art is important in making characters stand out and visually convey their traits.

For instance, in our upcoming video game The Lost Journal, August is a curious adventurer who loves hiking, nature, and the great outdoors! This can be seen in his fun, dandelion-like hair, his hiking boots, and bright red sweater. The color suggests that this character is outgoing and courageous!

Create your very own character for a video game from your imagination! We take students through the design process on paper first, then work on a digital painting software using stylus pens and Chromebooks.

Key Highlights:

  • Design your very own character for a video game!
  • Discover the importance of concept art in game development.
  • Take on fun drawing challenges to enhance your skills.
  • Explore the character design process step by step.
  • Develop a character profile to bring your creation to life.
  • Build confidence with presentation and public speaking practice.

Design Your Own Town

🎨 From Imagination to Illustration: Teaching Young Artists the Design Process

At Rosell Studios, we believe that big ideas start with simple sketches! Recently, we hosted a "Design Your Own Town" workshop for elementary school students, where young creators brought their imaginations to life. This hands-on session introduced students to key design principles—like turning ideas into sketches and refining them with digital tools.

Through fun, interactive drawing exercises, our goal was to show kids that every great design starts with a simple idea on paper. Here’s a breakdown of how we guided our young artists from imagination to fully illustrated towns—and how these lessons reflect the larger world of design work.

1. Starting with Big Ideas: Why Brainstorming Matters
Before any drawing begins, we encourage students to think about what makes a town feel complete. We asked questions like:

  • What places do you love visiting?
  • What is important to have in a town?
  • If you could add anything to your town, what would it be?

Students came up with a wide range of ideas—everything from libraries and schools to imaginative spaces like shark parks and magical castles. This brainstorming phase mirrors the first step in professional design work: defining the core concept. By encouraging open-ended thinking, kids learned that no idea is too big or too small to explore.

2. Sketching It Out: Bringing Ideas to Life
Once their ideas were flowing, we guided students through the sketching process. Using a projected iPad drawing demonstration, we showed how to break down complex structures into simple shapes like squares, circles, and triangles.

This method helps young artists (and even professionals) understand that every polished design starts with a rough outline. By starting with basic shapes, students could quickly and more confidently map out the main parts of their town while leaving room for details.

Key Lesson: Every big design starts small. Putting ideas on paper helps to capture concepts before refining them into something more detailed and professional.

3. Refining with Digital Tools: Where Art Meets Technology
As the students followed along, we demonstrated how to layer details onto their basic sketches. We explained how digital tools, like the iPad, allow artists to:

  • Add depth and dimension with outlines and shading.
  • Experiment with new ideas without erasing everything.
  • Bring imagination to life in a more polished, shareable format.

By blending traditional sketching techniques with digital art, students saw how modern design professionals work—starting with rough concepts and refining them into full-fledged concept art. With the world's ever-expanding technological development, it's not just about being creative but also about being technologically literate. Being versatile in computer skills sets young students up to learn new technological skills quickly.

4. Why Early Exposure to Design Matters
Introducing design principles at a young age fosters creativity, problem-solving, and visual communication skills. For many of our students, this workshop was their first experience combining traditional and digital art methods. By showing how small ideas can grow into complex designs, we hope to inspire future artists and designers to keep creating.
